REPORT ON A FIGHT AT THE SCHOOL CANTEEN

A fight broke out at the school canteen during recess. As a witness to the whole incident, I would like to submit a report on this matter.

1. The fight broke out at the school canteen on 12 March 2009 during recess at about 10.45 a.m. that day. The fight involved two students from our school where one of them ended up being severely injured after he was assaulted by the other.

2. As usual during recess, there was always a long queue for students buying nasi lemak in the canteen. Many of the students were pushing and shoving each other so that they could get to the front line quicker. A student in the front line was waiting for his change for RM50.00. The whole incident started when a big sized boy in the queue became very impatient and soon started giving the student nasty remarks. Not only that, he also rudely told the student to not show off by waiting for a big change.

3. Soon after that, the situation got worse. The student felt annoyed and shouted back at the boy. Two prefects who were on duty tried their best to calm down the two of them as well as the situation that got out of control. However, both of them refused to listen to the orders of the two prefects. The boy proceeded to punch the student in the face out of anger and caused his nose to bleed. A moment later, the other prefects and a canteen operator were called to help out at the scene where the fight took place. They caught hold of the two students and pulled them away from each other to prevent the situation from becoming even worse. The two students ended up with many bruises and were taken to the sickbay to be nursed. As soon as the commotion was over and everything was back to normal, the rest of the students continued buying food.

I sincerely hope that my report will greatly help the school authority in their further investigation to settle this matter.

QUESTION 3 : WHAT MORAL VALUES DID YOU LEARN AFTER READING THE NOVEL “THE PEARL” BY JOHN STEINBECK? SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER WITH CLOSE REFERENCE TO THE TEXT.

After reading the novel “The Pearl” written by john Steinbeck, I have learned a few moral values from it. The moral values or lessons in every novel teach us to shape our life and also how to live life the right way. The moral values that I have learned in this novel includes to cherish and love our family, not give up in life and not to have racial discrimination.

One of the moral values that I have learned is to always cherish and love our family. In this novel, Juana shows that she deeply cares for her son, Coyotito. When a scorpion “fell on the baby’s shoulder, landed and struck” (page 5) Coyotito, Juana immediately sucks the poison out from the baby’s punctured shoulder without even thinking twice or considering that her life might be andangered as well. She is also the one who has suggested that her baby be taken to see the doctor. Another instance that shows love in the family is when Kino is willing to sacrifice his life by diving into the ocean to seek what he claims to be the greatest pearl in the world. Kino wants to find the pearl so that he can hire the doctor to cure Coyotito. I think that this moral value has made me care even more for my family than before. I know that what Kino and Juana do is a very noble thing.

Besides that, I have learned to not give up in life. Kino, the main character of “The Pearl”, despite being attacked three times in which two results in him being seriously injured, does not give up his battle, hopes and dreams. In the novel, he battles to stay alive from assassins with malicious intents to snatch the pearl away by any means possible. He also hopes very much to be able to sell the pearl in the capital when the pearl dealers try to trick him. Furthermore, he dreams of being married to Juana in the church and wanting Coyotito to have an education. He wishes to let his family have a more promising future and better life if he can sell the pearl. In order to achieve this goal, he takes his family on an extremely dangerous journey across the sea and mountains to the capital. By his actions, I have learned to always strive for the best in everything that I do. I also learned from this moral value to never give up when push comes to shore.

Moreover, I have learned to not have racial discrimination. In this novel that I have studied, the doctor, his Indian servant and the priest show racism towards the Mexican Indian natives. The doctor treats the Mexican Indian as animals and feels that he is of a superior race. The doctor’s Indian servant initially refuses to speak to Kino in his language when Kino visits the doctor. The priest does not really care for the welfare of the Mexican Indian natives as he speaks to them softly like little children. The novel shows that racism will only result in the abuse, deceit and exploitation of the Mexican Indian natives. This moral value teaches me not to be a racist and this is very important as I am livin gin a colourful country. It also teaches me that racism is not the right way of life.

In a nutshell, the moral values found in this novel make me a better person each day. This novel also teaches me that family is important no matter what, I must always work hard in order to achieve something as well as to acknowledge every individual as no different from myself.

"The Pearl" - Name the character or group of characters who are VILLAINOUS. Write about them and show why you think they are so.

Workbook Question 5
In the novel “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, name the character or group of characters who are villainous. Write about them and show why you think they are so.

Every story has protagonists and antagonists. The protagonists would definitely be the heroes and the antagonists would be the villains. Characters of a villainous essence undoubtedly make a story all the more interesting and attractive. In the novel “The Pearl”, the appearance of villainous groups or character is absolutely foreseeable.

One of the characters that I think is villainous is the doctor. The doctor is a wicked and selfish person who cares more for money than the welfare of the people who seek treatment from him. After Coyotito is stung by a poisonous scorpion, Kino and Juana bring him to see the doctor in hopes of curing their son. The doctor initially rejects them but upon hearing the news that Kino has found the great pearl, he decides to pay Coyotito an unexpected visit. Instead of curing the sick baby, the doctor gives him a drink of “three drops of ammonia” (page 34) which worsens his already severe condition. By doing this, the money-minded doctor hopes that he can charge a higher fee for his treatment. By his actions, I think that the doctor is a greedy man as he would go to any extent to get what he desires. This is proven when he is willing to risk an innocent baby’s life for the sake of getting richer.

Besides that, I also consider the group of pearl buyers villainous. As soon as the news about Kino’s successful attempt in finding the remarkable pearl spreads, many pearl dealers start forcing Kino to sell the pearl to them. In the process of doing so, they plot schemes and tricks so as to manipulate Kino to give in to them. When he goes to town to sell the pearl, the group of pearl buyers works together, cooperating to cheat him. They understand well that Kino really needs money to hire the doctor and for this reason, they decide to take advantage of him. They give comments on the pearl’s flaws and imperfections. Their sole purpose of acting this way is so that they can offer very low prices for it. It is undisputed that Kino feels the “evil coagulating about him” (page49). Fortunately, he knows that they want to cheat him decide not to sell the pearl to them. After listening to much of their lies, Kino opts to set out to the capital where he feels is a better place to sell his pearl. As a result of his decision, he finds that his house is burnt with “leaping flames through the wall” (page 62) and his canoe destroyed. In my opinion, what the pearl buyers are trying to do is very cruel as it is an act of depravity. I also know that they are being dishonest in their dealings with Kino.

Also, I think that the trackers in this novel possess villainous qualities. The trackers are a group of three ruthless men who think of nothing other than brutally murdering another human being to get what they want. On their journey to the capital, Kino and Juana as well as baby Coyotito face the dangers that the trackers pose. The trackers are willing to take Kino’s family’s lives so that they can snatch the pearl from them. Kino has to lead his family to safety by going into the mountains and seeking refuge in a cave. The trackers are certain to kill Kino and his family when they are tracked. Kino then decides to kill one of the trackers any chance he gets. While in the cave, Juana tries her best to keep Coyotito quiet but to no avail as the trackers have already heard Coyotito’s cry. A tracker fires a shot and Kino attacks him, resulting in the tracker’s death. Kino then proceeds to kill the last two trackers with a rifle in desperation to protect his family. However, Kino soon finds out that Coyotito is dead with “the top of his head shot away” (page 87). Kino who is filled with sorrow after knowing that he has lost his most precious possession throws the pearl away. I find the trackers heartless in their act of achieving their goal, so much so that they commit merciless crimes which result in a gruesome death.

In a nutshell, I know that the villains in this novel serve to create an atmosphere of tension, fear and impending doom so as to make this a wonderful story filled with drama and suspense. This novel brings out the negative aspects of human behavior such as greed, selfishness and wickedness and shows how these qualities affect the lives of people of different social classes. Nevertheless, I still find this story beautiful and interesting.
